Judge Edward M. Thomas retired from the Wayne County Circuit Bench in 2005 after serving as a judge of that court for fifteen years. Prior to his appointment to the Circuit Court by Governor James Blanchard, he served as a judge of the Recorder’s Court for the City of Detroit for eleven years, having been elected in 1978. During his 26-year judicial career, Judge Thomas presided in over 1500 criminal and civil trials and gained praise from both plaintiff’s and defense attorneys for his efficiency, knowledge of the law and attentiveness to proceedings. In 1991, trial attorneys ranked Judge Thomas in the top ten of 204 Michigan state and federal judges based upon criteria such as fairness, decisiveness, work habits, temperament, legal scholarship and ability to withstand public pressure. He has also served as a visiting judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals on several occasions. He attained “Outstanding” and “Superior” ratings by bar associations over the course of his judicial career.
Upon retiring from the bench, Judge Thomas was appointed to the position of Corporation Counsel for Wayne County, Michigan. He retired from that position on July 1, 2009.
Judge Thomas is licensed to practice in the State of Michigan and has also been admitted to practice in the Federal Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the United States Supreme Court.
At this time, Judge Thomas is available to assist in the facilitation of legal disputes as well as private mediations.
